BitRock operates off-grid natural-gas generation next to the gas source in County of Newell, Alberta, supplying a modular data center for AI/HPC and blockchain compute. Phase 1 is commissioned at 10 MW.

The model

Gas, power and compute on one site

Fuel is bought or tapped at the wellhead, converted on site, and consumed locally — with no grid interconnection in the path.

    Natural Gas

    Purchased from gas retailers or the Bow River gas co-op, or tapped at the wellhead from acquired gas fields.

    On-Site Generation

    Skid-mounted gas gensets deployed for off-grid self-supply — no transmission or distribution fees.

    Data Center

    Modular containerized halls with air or immersion cooling, medium-voltage distribution and SuperNet fiber access.

  4. 04

    AI/HPC & Blockchain Compute

    Two revenue lines: self-mining Bitcoin, and AI/HPC compute colocation where the client brings its own GPUs.

Why Alberta

Low-cost gas, cold air, and no interconnection queue

Off-grid self-supply avoids transmission and distribution fees as well as interconnection queues.

  • In July 2025 Alberta's average gas price was ~C$0.78/GJ (ICE NGX AB-NIT Same Day Index), implying a fuel cost of ~C$0.009/kWh.
  • Generation cost at current gas price is approximately 1–2 ¢/kWh, varying with gas price and genset efficiency.
  • Alberta has capped data-center grid access, with the Phase II queue extending to ~2027.
  • Cold winters and cool, dry summers assist cooling and support low PUE.
  • The site sits on the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and the CP Rail mainline, with Alberta SuperNet fiber passing nearby.

Compute

Two workload lines on one power asset

Self-mining monetises power today; AI/HPC colocation upgrades the same halls once offtake and GPUs are secured. Both lines can run in parallel.

Self-mining Bitcoin

Base-load ASIC workloads running on low-cost off-grid power, proven at the partner's live facility in the same area through extreme winter cold.

AI/HPC colocation

Halls and cooling upgraded per client need — containerized air or immersion cooling — with the client bringing its own GPUs.

Infrastructure partnership

Rack leasing, EPC construction, power-asset cooperation and gas or equipment supply.

The project provides the site, cleared approvals, integrated low-cost power, a commissioned Phase 1 asset and a local engineering and O&M team. We are seeking project capital, compute and colocation clients, AI compute and technology partners, and gas supply and equipment resources.
